Cement board is a popular substrate for tile installations. Its moisture resistance and durability make it an excellent choice for wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. However, one common question arises: can you tile directly on cement board without using an additional layer of backerboard or underlayment?

The answer is yes, in most cases, you can tile directly on cement board. However, there are a few important factors to consider to ensure a successful installation:

1. Verify Cement Board Type:

Not all cement boards are created equal. Fiber-reinforced cement board is the only type suitable for direct tile installation. Ensure your cement board meets the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A118.10.

2. Prepare Cement Board Surface:

Before tiling, clean the cement board surface thoroughly to remove any dust, debris, or loose fibers. Use a wire brush or scrub sponge to roughen the surface slightly to enhance adhesion.

3. Use a Suitable Mortar:

Choose a thin-set mortar specifically designed for cement board installations. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and applying the mortar.

4. Apply Thin-Set Mortar Uniformly:

Spread the thin-set mortar evenly over the cement board surface using a notched trowel. Apply the mortar to both the cement board and the back of the tile to ensure complete coverage.

5. Place Tiles Carefully:

Position the tiles firmly into the thin-set mortar, ensuring they are level and properly spaced. Use a rubber mallet or tapping block to gently tap the tiles into place.

6. Grout Joints Properly:

Once the tiles are installed, allow them to set for 24 hours before applying grout. Use a grout float to apply grout into the joints, filling them completely. Allow the grout to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Seal the Installation:

After the grout is fully cured, apply a penetrating sealer to protect the installation from moisture and stains. This is especially important for wet areas such as showers and backsplashes.
