Which Side of Cement Board Does Tile Go On Walls?

When installing tile on walls, it's crucial to understand which side of the cement board should face the tile and which side should be against the wall. Cement board is a backer board commonly used in tile installations, providing a stable and moisture-resistant surface for the tile to adhere to.

Cement boards typically have two sides: a smooth side and a rough, mesh-reinforced side. The rough side is designed to provide a better bond with thin-set mortar, which is the adhesive used to attach the tile to the cement board.

Installing Tile on the Smooth Side

The smooth side of the cement board should NOT face the tile. This side is designed to be against the wall. It provides a flat and even surface for the cement board to adhere to, ensuring a secure bond.

Installing Tile on the Rough Side
