How to Tile Over Cinder Block Walls: A Comprehensive Guide

Tiling over cinder block walls can be a challenging but rewarding project. By following the steps outlined below, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that will last for years to come.

Materials Needed:

  • Cinder block wall
  • Thinset mortar
  • Grout
  • Tile spacers
  • Notched trowel
  • Float
  • Sponge
  • Masking tape

Step 1: Prepare the Wall

Start by removing any dirt or debris from the cinder block wall. Use a wire brush to clean any loose mortar from the joints. If there are any holes or cracks in the wall, fill them with a patching compound.

Step 2: Apply Thinset Mortar

Mix the thinset mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a notched trowel to apply the mortar to the wall, holding the trowel at a 45-degree angle. Spread the mortar evenly across the surface, making sure to fill all the voids.

Step 3: Set the Tiles

Press the tiles into the thinset mortar, starting from the bottom row. Use tile spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced. Tap the tiles gently with a float to ensure they are firmly set.

Step 4: Grout the Tiles

Once the tiles are set, allow the thinset mortar to cure for the recommended time, then apply grout to the joints between the tiles. Use a grout float to press the grout into the joints.

Step 5: Clean the Tiles

Use a sponge to clean the excess grout from the tiles. Rinse the sponge frequently to prevent the grout from drying on the tiles.

Step 6: Seal the Grout

Once the grout has dried completely, apply a grout sealer to protect it from stains and moisture.

Tips for Tiling Over Cinder Block Walls:

  • Use a backer board or mesh to strengthen the cinder block wall before tiling.
  • Apply a primer to the cinder block wall to help the thinset mortar bond better.
  • Use a notched trowel with a 1/4-inch notch for most tile applications.
  • Allow the thinset mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before grouting.
  • Use a grout float with a rubber edge to avoid scratching the tiles.
By following these steps and tips, you can successfully tile over a cinder block wall and achieve a beautiful and durable finish.
