Floor tiles can be an attractive and functional addition to any home, but before you begin to lay them, it is important to make sure the floor is level. An uneven floor can cause tiles to stick out, come loose and potentially even crack. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to level a tile floor, and with the right tools, it can be done quickly and efficiently.
To begin, you will need a self-levelling compound, a notched trowel, a straightedge and a spirit level. You may also need a hammer, a chisel and a drill, depending on the condition of your floor.
Start by clearing the floor of any debris, furniture or other objects. Next, inspect the floor for any loose tiles and remove them. If necessary, use a hammer and chisel to chip away any stubborn tiles. You may also need to drill some holes in the floor to even out any high spots.
In order to use the self-levelling compound, the surface must be free of dust and any other particles. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust and then use a damp cloth to mop the entire surface. Allow the floor to dry completely before continuing.
Once the floor is ready, mix the self-levelling compound according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Using the notched trowel, spread the compound over the entire floor. Then, use the straightedge to level the compound, checking it with the spirit level to ensure accuracy. Allow the compound to dry completely before continuing.
Now that the floor is level, you can begin laying the tiles. Make sure to use an adhesive appropriate for the type of tiles you are using. Then, lay the tiles in a grid pattern, making sure to use spacers to ensure consistent spacing. Finally, grout the tiles and allow them to dry before walking on them or adding furniture.
