How to Install Vinyl Plank Tile

Vinyl plank tile has become increasingly popular for its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. It offers the look of real wood or stone without the high cost and maintenance. If you're considering installing vinyl plank tile in your home, this guide will provide a step-by-step explanation to help you achieve a professional-looking finish.

Step 1: Preparing the Subfloor

A smooth and even subfloor is crucial for a successful vinyl plank tile installation. Before starting, inspect the subfloor for any imperfections, such as unevenness, cracks, or gaps. If necessary, address these issues by patching cracks with a suitable filler and leveling the subfloor using a self-leveling compound. Ensure the subfloor is clean and dry before proceeding.

For existing flooring, consider removing existing carpet or tile to expose the subfloor. If you are installing over concrete, it's advisable to check for moisture. If moisture is present, use a moisture barrier underlayment before laying down the vinyl planks.

Step 2: Installing an Underlayment

Underlayment serves as a cushioning layer and helps to reduce noise and provide insulation. It also creates a smooth surface for the vinyl planks to lay on and prevents the planks from clicking together too tightly. Choose an appropriate underlayment based on the type of subfloor and the level of cushioning desired.

Most underlayments come in rolls and are easy to install. Unroll the underlayment onto the subfloor, starting from a corner. Use a utility knife to trim any excess underlayment along the edges. Ensure the underlayment is completely flat and that the seams overlap by a few inches.

Step 3: Planning the Layout

Before starting installation, plan the layout of your vinyl plank tile to ensure a seamless look. Vinyl planks often have a tongue-and-groove system, which allows them to be easily interlocked. Begin by measuring the area where you will be installing the planks and consider the direction you want the planks to run, whether it's parallel or perpendicular to the walls.

It's recommended to start with a full plank along the longest wall. This will ensure that the planks along the other walls are cut to size. Mark the center point of the room and lay down planks radiating out from the center to ensure an even layout.

Step 4: Installing the First Row

Start installing the first row of planks along the longest wall. Leave a gap between the planks and the wall to allow for expansion and contraction. This gap can be covered later with baseboards. Use a tapping block to gently tap the planks together, ensuring they are flush and secure.

When installing planks near corners, use a utility knife to cut the planks to size. Use a straightedge and a pencil to mark the cut line. Make sure to cut the planks at a 45-degree angle for a clean finish.

Step 5: Installing Subsequent Rows

Continue installing the remaining rows of planks, ensuring that each row is offset from the previous one. This staggered pattern, known as a brickwork layout, helps prevent the planks from aligning in straight lines and creates a more visually appealing finish.

Use a spacer to maintain a consistent gap between the planks and the wall. You can use a tapping block and a rubber mallet to secure the planks together.

Step 6: Trimming and Finishing

Once the planks are installed, use a utility knife to trim any excess planks along the edges and around obstacles like doors and windows. Use a baseboard or shoe molding to cover the expansion gap between the planks and the walls.

Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the planks to seal any gaps and prevent moisture from seeping in. This will help to protect the planks and extend their lifespan.
